My Beloved Mother-in-law! - Mrs. Prema Nathan

This year, my dear mother-in-law would have been 95! She left us for her Heavenly abode at 91, leaving behind a lifetime of fond memories.... My novel titled No Mother-in-law, Please! is an ode to all mothers-in-law, in all their myriad forms!

                                                 No Mother-in-law, Please!

My MIL, at her 80th Birthday Celebrations!

This book is humbly dedicated to my mother-in-law, Prema Nathan. She is a simple, talented and god-fearing lady. After her husband’s early demise, she single-handedly and ably brought up her two children.

Among her noteworthy talents are singing, steno-typing, playing the violin, embroidery, tailoring and cooking.

She is a stickler for time and tidiness. She loves to regale us with mythological stories and anecdotes from her family’s history. At 90, she’s a bundle of energy, bustling about the house with élan.

Above all, she has a mind of her own and doesn’t hesitate to call a spade, a spade!

Here’s wishing her a long, healthy and peaceful life!

                                          No Mother-in-law, Please! (www.wattpad.com)

    Foreword

One word that strikes unimaginable terror in a young bride’s heart is ‘mother-in-law’. It is not surprising, as a lady who is utmost loving and compassionate as a mother, often becomes a despicable ogre as soon as she becomes a mother-in-law!

The reasons could be several, such as a difference in opinions, points-of-view, temperaments and attitudes; ego, one-upmanship, bias, prejudice, greed, jealousy and hatred.

Often, life after marriage becomes a continuous tussle between the daughter-in-law and mother-in-law, with the husband/son sandwiched helplessly between the two warring ladies. Each lady tries to exert her control over the man and the household and establish her supremacy.

A lady, who has been tortured by her mother-in-law as a newly-wed bride, viciously and gleefully takes over the onerous mantle effortlessly, when she becomes a mother-in-law!

No wonder then that many a young girl these days has a strict (often unspoken) rule when she decides to marry. ‘No mother-in-law, please!’ Obviously, she wants to live peacefully and happily with her husband, without the baggage of a nagging mother-in-law!

But there are always exceptions to the rule!

An excerpt from the short story - Once Again
The suitcases were packed and ready, along with an assortment of cloth and plastic bags stuffed with last - minute stuff. They stood like soldiers ready to be deputed to war; mute, watchful and alert. Forlorn too!
Teertha looked around her children’s room one last time. The peach walls decorated with cheerful wall-stickers of Mickey and Minnie romping in Disneyland amid quaint castles and fountains, balloons and thronging crowds evoked a wave of nostalgia in her mind. How enthusiastically her children Tinu and Minu had insisted that she order for those colorful and glossy wall-stickers from an online shopping website!
Tinu was her six-year old son, the apple of her eye! Smart, lovable and forever mischievous! Minu was her nine-year old daughter, her sweetie-pie! Cute, adorable and always dependable to own responsibility of her younger “bhaiyya”! Now she would be leaving them behind forever.

Excerpt
“Can I speak to Inspector Karanth?”

“Yes you may. But not for long! You all need rest. I’ll send him in. He has been waiting for you to regain consciousness. In fact he has been up the whole time, pacing up and down in the corridor outside!”

Amused, Maya thought about how he must’ve been refreshed by his nap in ‘Summer City’ while on duty, the previous day. No wonder, he was as busy as a bee at the hospital!

The next moment, he materialized in front of her.
He smartly saluted her and wished her “Good afternoon, Madam. Hope you are feeling better!”

“Yes, thank you Inspector Karanth. But I don’t have the heart to wish you “Good Afternoon!” In fact, no afternoon will ever be good for me, until I solve this mystery. By the way, how’s the scene like at ‘Summer City’? What’s going on?

Recently I happened to read the novel, The Mysterious Basement of Summer City written by Mrs Priya Ramesh Swaminathan.
True to the preface of the book the author has kept written the story so well and it leaves one hooked to the book till the end to find out who or what exactly is the culprit. The characters are well etched out come alive in the book. Enjoyable must
