Youth all over the world, are an energized lot,
following their dreams, philosophy and lifestyle choices. They crave for
attention, affection, respect and a voice that isn’t ignored or trampled upon!
Let’s check out what catches the fancy of these young torch-bearers of a bright
future.
High fashion: The latest trends in clothes, accessories, styles and
attitudes enthuse the global youth. Lots of time, money and effort is spent on
acquiring the tangibles and emulating the intangibles!
The latest technology: Gizmo-freaks abound among the present pack of
youngsters. Mobiles with the latest apps, LCDs, high-tech sound systems, I-pads,
I-pods, laptops and the like draw them like bees to honey.
Food: Having the choicest of cuisine and exchanging notes about them are
de rigueur for the youth, ever-ready to experiment with their taste-buds. A
worrying trend however, is the eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia;
rampant among a section of the youth having low self-esteem.
Entertainment: The global youth knows how to let its hair down and enjoy
different genres of films, television-serials and music. Indulging in hobbies, surfing
the net, computer games and sports gives them refreshing vigor and vitality.
Fitness: Regular outings to the gym, exercises, yoga and counseling are
routine for these youngsters who realize the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
Since they have fun while exercising, they don’t mind the labor for the six-pack
abs. They have realized the dictum of a healthy body and a healthy mind.
Sex: Youngsters take pains to discover the facts of life themselves,
thanks to the information available on the internet, books galore, informed
opinions of educators and their physicians! Casual sex is shunned due to
awareness about sexually transmitted diseases like AIDS and STDs. Pregnancy
among teenage girls is however on the rise in spite of the increased awareness
about contraceptives.
Politics: This is not a dirty word for the youngsters of today. There
have been global revolutions brought about by motivated and concerned youth.
The recent uprisings in various countries are a case in point.
Social networking: Generation Next is totally wired into what’s
happening in the neighborhood and in the world, thanks to social networking
sites like Facebook, Twitter, etc. The youth use these platforms to
interact, find long-lost friends, network, advertise products and services as
well as draw global attention to important issues such as global warming,
pollution, social and political unrest, corruption and civic issues.
Social service: The global youth has its heart in the right place as
they strive to help the needy, underprivileged ones financially and physically.
They volunteer in NGOs as teachers, fund-raisers and coordinators. They are an
aware and responsible lot.
Having fun: Just watching them indulging in jamming sessions, group
activities like picnics, projects, hanging-out, watching movies or gossiping
and cracking jokes will make the day for many weary souls!
To sum up, we could learn a lot
from Gen-Next. Couldn’t we emulate their sense of fun, dare-devil attitude to
fight for the right causes, unity and integrity?
That would be really giving
the ‘Devils’ their due!
