An excerpt
“Madam, Mr. Goel wishes to have a word with you. May I send him in?” Manini’s secretary informed her, at 4 p.m. the following day.
Manini had been on tenterhooks even
since she had woken up that day. She was curious and eager to know the secret.
She had resolved that she wouldn’t pester Giridharji at all and would let him take a call on whether he wanted to
divulge it or not. She had thrown the ball in his court.
Now she was thrilled. Every nerve of
her being was on red alert! Her heart thudded loudly against her chest even as
she said, as calmly as she could, “O.K. Send him in.”
She rose from her chair as he
entered, wishing him “Good morning Giridharji”
and bade him to be seated. The peon served them tea as usual and went away.
As they quietly sipped the delicious
cardamom tea, Manini sensed some tension in the air. Giridharji didn’t seem to be too comfortable.
His hands had a tremor as he took the mug to his mouth and his eyes were
downcast. It was as if he was avoiding eye contact with her.
