Today, the 22nd of April, is celebrated as Earth Day.
The entire world is plagued by the ill-effects of global warming, pollution, garbage disposal, nuclear and e-waste, etc.
Concerted efforts are being made by concerned activists like Green Peace volunteers, NGOs and of course, conscientious Governments; to reduce the harmful effects of pollutants, etc. as mentioned above, so that the future generations will be assured of a clean and green Earth to reside peacefully in.
Population explosion, deforestation, extensive mining and exploration for oil and natural gas, haphazard development, traffic congestion, industrialization, etc. are the bane of modern existence.
Don't we all long to breathe in fresh, unpolluted air everyday and drink pure water, straight from our taps?
A lot can be achieved if all of us contribute our mite to maintaining our ecosystem and environment in a pristine, organized and planned manner.
My hubby and I have taken the following steps to minimize our carbon foot-prints on Mother Earth:
1. We don't have a TV set in our house since 11 years. Surprising, but true! It provides us with lots of spare time to pursue our chores, hobbies, have long walks and lively conversations and of course, blissful silence from all that noise pollution!
2. We wash our clothes, except the essential ones, twice a week. Thus we save lots of precious water.
3. I swab my house, only once a week, again saving water in the bargain.
4. We walk to nearby places within a radius of 3-4 kms.thus saving precious petrol. It ensures that we are as fit as a fiddle too.
5. We water our potted plants and wash our motor-cycle with mugs of water instead of watering with a hose-pipe, again saving water.
6. We have avoided buying a car as it is less fuel-efficient than a motor-cycle.
7. We don't have gadgets like ACs, coolers, tablets, laptops, ovens, etc. that consume a lot of electricity.
8. We use the lights and fans only when absolutely essential.
9. We switch off all the lights, etc. when not in use.
10.We unplug all the electrical wires and cables from the gadgets, when they are not used.
11.We recycle, repair and reuse all the material that we can. We seggregate wet and dry garbage at source.
12.We are contented using our old desk-top PC, mobile phone, radio, fridge, etc. We avoid constantly changing or upgrading electronic items that are working perfectly, unlike those people who keep discarding old ones for the latest brands.
13.We use the PC, mobile and phone very sparingly, going in for pre-paid plans of usage, thus saving money and time. We also avoid being subjected to harmful radiations from these objects.
14. We are vegetarian. My hubby doesn't smoke or drink.
I am sure that you too are doing your bit for mankind. Kindly let me know the steps that you have taken to save Mother Earth from being destroyed.
