          I stared back, unabashed. He was looking drop-dead gorgeous. His thick hair was being ruffled by the strong wind. Though rivulets of perspiration ran down his temples and neck, he appeared fresh and alert. Only the clenching and unclenching of his square jaws gave away his tension. He was evidently waiting for me to speak first. Ladies first!

          Looking intently into his dark eyes, I was trying to fathom his intentions. Discussion indeed! About what?.........

          Feeling slightly uncomfortable, he turned his attention towards the copper bottle that he had in his right hand. “Water?” he inquired.

          “Thanks” I said and took it from his hand. As my hand slightly touched his, a frisson went up my spine. I looked downwards and then raised my head and had a long swig from the bottle, taking care to not touch the bottle’s rim. He was keenly watching my tanned throat as the water went down my gullet and I gulped. Then his gaze fell on my heaving chest.

           His left hand twitched as it gripped the lower part of the bench. Was he nervous?

          Tarun was soon questioning Shridhar Vyas at his home.

          “Sir, a strand of your hair was found in Tina’s bathroom. Its DNA matches that of yours! What was it doing there?”

          The suave Shridhar Vyas appeared flummoxed. But the shrewd person that he was, he kept his eyes from blinking and looked at Tarun squarely in the eye.

          “I beg your pardon!”

          “You heard it right! Your hair was found at the scene of the crime. What were you doing there? When did you go there? Was Tina alive then? Was Colonel Manavendra there too? Do you know anything about Tina’s murder and the whereabouts of the Colonel?

          “No. I don’t know anything about what you are asking. I didn’t go there ever!”

          “The DNA evidence says so!” Tarun quietly pointed it out.

          “Then prove it! Don’t waste my time.”

          “You are under arrest Mr. Shridhar Vyas!” Tarun showed him his arrest warrant, with a flourish.

          Shridhar Vyas mutely accompanied him to the police jeep, with two constables holding each arm of his. All that Shridhar could think then was that his fate was sealed.

         At the lock-up, the inquisition began in right earnest. Tarun was all business!

         “So now you will speak Mr. Vyas, right?”

“So what shall we order? Punjabi or Chinese?” She looked coyly at him, blinking quickly to give him the appropriate ‘come-hither’ look.

“We’ll order for parathas or rotis with a Punjabi paneer curry, if you don’t mind”, he said even as she turned up her small nose. She looked rather cute as she did that, noted Himesh.

“I’ll have Veg. Schezwan rice and noodles please. Firstly, let’s have some hot soup!”

Without waiting for him to agree, she gestured to the bearer who rushed to their table, eager to note down their order.

“One tomato soup shared in 2 bowls, please”, she ordered crisply.

Himesh wryly thought about how he was in hot soup, right then. He dreaded the inevitable confrontation with her later that night. He wondered about how to foist her off. But he needn’t worry unnecessarily, he remembered. He had bribed the bearer to add some extra chilly powder in her food. That would definitely keep her busy throughout the night!

“Why are you grinning like a Cheshire cat?” she asked, as she saw him beaming involuntarily from ear to ear at the thought of her discomfiture later at night, just as she came on to him!

Mystery novel at its best

Dear mystery aficionados! You are in for a treat! Author Priya Ramesh Swaminathan has concocted a tale of an anthropologist researcher and his two dedicated assistants. The other characters in the plot add to the suspense and strange things happening at the site. The author has played with words and adds her inimitable style to the setting of the story.                                    As if on cue, Himesh signalled a boatman who had been impatiently looking at them all the while, hoping for passengers.  As the boat touched the lowermost step of the ghat, Mira and Himesh raced down and hopped into the narrow canoe. Both were as excited as small children. When the boatman started laboriously rowing away from the shore, both revelled in the scenery around them. 

                                   Fascinated, they observed the ancient Mahakaleshwar temple slowly receding from sight, along with the ghats. Once in the middle of the river, they looked appreciatively at the hills and greenery all around them. The vast blue sky was reflected in the equally vast expanse of calm and clear water. The peaceful silence was overpowering. They too were under its spell, as they gazed alternately at the scenery and at each other. Only the rhythmic noise of the oars against the water, the slight puffing of the burly boatman and their heartbeats broke the spell.

                                     Himesh looked at Mira, devouring her trim figure clad in a long tribal-print skirt and plain white blouse, with her long and straight black hair pulled into a high ponytail that enhanced her high forehead and delicate cheekbones. Her no makeup look suited her. Her dark eyes now had a dreamy, far-away look. He felt like kissing her, but the grim boatman deterred him.

                                    Mira had also looked longingly at Himesh, appreciating his casual yet chic dressing style. He looked gorgeous in his navy blue jeans, sky-blue T-shirt and grey sneakers. As the breeze ruffled his thick hair, she longed to run her fingers through his hair too! But one look at the inscrutable boatman gave her jitters.

                                   Suddenly Himesh’s funny-bone peaked up. “Hey look, a crocodile!”
