Shadows in the Dark Paperback – Large Print, July 1, 2021

Paperback

Excerpt

As if on cue, Himesh signalled a boatman who had been impatiently looking at them all the while, hoping for passengers.  As the boat touched the lowermost step of the ghat, Mira and Himesh raced down and hopped into the narrow canoe. Both were as excited as small children. When the boatman started laboriously rowing away from the shore, both revelled in the scenery around them.

Fascinated, they observed the ancient Mahakaleshwar temple slowly receding from sight, along with the ghats. Once in the middle of the river, they looked appreciatively at the hills and greenery all around them. The vast blue sky was reflected in the equally vast expanse of calm and clear water. The peaceful silence was overpowering. They too were under its spell, as they gazed alternately at the scenery and at each other. Only the rhythmic noise of the oars against the water, the slight puffing of the burly boatman and their heartbeats broke the spell.

Himesh looked at Mira, devouring her trim figure clad in a long tribal-print skirt and plain white blouse, with her long and straight black hair pulled into a high ponytail that enhanced her high forehead and delicate cheekbones. Her no makeup look suited her. Her dark eyes now had a dreamy, far-away look. He felt like kissing her, but the grim boatman deterred him.

Mira had also looked longingly at Himesh, appreciating his casual yet chic dressing style. He looked gorgeous in his navy blue jeans, sky-blue T-shirt and grey sneakers. As the breeze ruffled his thick hair, she longed to run her fingers through his hair too! But one look at the inscrutable boatman gave her jitters.

Suddenly Himesh’s funny-bone peaked up. “Hey look, a crocodile!”

My Confidante, Mum's the Word - Woman's Era (Part 2)

This article of mine, was published in the October (First) 2012 issue of Woman's Era.

                                            My Confidante? Mum’s the word!

Often, though children have their best friends, they still feel secure only while confiding their innermost thoughts, desires, fears, troubles and secrets to their mothers. This is because they know that mothers are non-judgmental and have only the best wishes for their children in their hearts. They will also not poke fun at them and look down upon them. They accept their children as they are, with all their flaws and strengths. They will never spread rumors or tales about their children.

Puneet was a young college-going boy of about 20 years. He was most comfortable in the company of boys. He wasn’t attracted to girls at all. He was confused and scared about this peculiar fact. What was wrong with him, he often wondered secretly. Gradually he realized that he could be a gay. When his classmates started whispering about his sexual orientation behind his back, he knew that he had to face the truth. He was unhappy that he didn’t have any really close friend in whom he could confide about his feelings.

His sister was immature and would definitely have made fun of him. His strict father was out of the question. He then zeroed in on his beloved mother. Yes, she would be the correct person to confide in! She had always been his friend, philosopher and guide. Surely, she would understand him and sympathize with his plight. Then he corrected himself. He didn’t want sympathy, but empathy!

With some hesitation, he confided in his mother when no one else was at home. Though she was shocked at first, she immediately reconciled herself to the fact and tried to make him feel more comfortable with his own identity. She tried to make him aware, that being gay didn’t change the person that he was. He’d still be as wonderful as ever. She asked him to meet a counselor and talk about his predicament. She advised him to explore his own feelings with clarity. He was still young. Perhaps, he was confused. If he still insisted that he was right, he’d have to be bold and face the barbs directed by society towards him. She assured him that she’d stand by him through thick and thin. She’d also convince her husband about the right of their son to lead his life the way he wanted to!

With such strong and unconditional support, Puneet felt light-hearted and strong enough to face the challenges of life. He patted himself on his back mentally for having chosen the right person to confide in. He thanked his mother and hugged her. He felt so relieved!

International Museum Day! - Salar Jung Museum - An Ode to Mankind's Rich, Cultural Legacy!

Some years ago. my husband and myself, paid this museum a visit. I had earlier visited this museum on my college's trip to Hyderabad as part of our Geology study tour. We had visited the Cuddapah region for its unique geological formations. Just as Geology is the study of the earth and its origins, so is the museum, a fascinating study of mankind's glorious past!

The artifacts, paintings, photographs, costumes, statues and other memorabilia; painstakingly curated to present a delightful display of the ethos and culture of our ancient heritage; are a treat for the eyes. There are sections devoted to artifacts from other Asian and European countries too. Thus we could observe how art and craft could have a unifying and harmonious influence on this divisive and strife-torn world!

The museum is well-maintained, spacious and airy. A food-court offers succor to those who are exhausted after a tour of the sprawling premises. We would've liked more variety in the food-items available there

The special and eagerly looked-forward to attraction in the museum is the musical clock which strikes the hour regularly. A figure comes out and rings the gong to mark the hour and goes back to its previous position inside the clock. Seats have been arranged like in an open-air auditorium, to watch
this hourly ritual.

Posing beside the famed musical clock!

                                .

Another attraction is the 'Veiled Rebecca', the marble statue that is striking because of the exquisitely sculpted drapes, including a veil on the lady's figurine! The contemplative expression on the statue's face is admirable. There are several other equally detailed statues in that hall, but the 'Veiled Rebecca' stands out amidst them, flanked by huge mirrors to enable a 360 degrees' view for the viewers to appreciate the sculptor's eye for detail!

  The irresistible "Veiled Rebecca"!

   Brilliant sculptures!

The clean washroom and drinking water facilities are a welcome relief.

The greenery outside the museum is soothing and refreshing. Hence the museum is an oasis of calm where one could safely retreat to, for a break from the rat-race!

We also learn that all wonderful, pleasing objects take lots of resources, time and patience to create and no one must mindlessly destroy them for sadistic pleasure, misplaced vengeance or short-lived gain.
The fabulous collection in this museum enriches one's life and redefines its purpose!
