My Life, My Way! - Another Excerpt - 2

E-book

                                                                          An excerpt

“Madam, Mr. Goel wishes to have a word with you. May I send him in?” Manini’s secretary informed her, at 4 p.m. the following day.

Manini had been on tenterhooks even since she had woken up that day. She was curious and eager to know the secret. She had resolved that she wouldn’t pester Giridharji at all and would let him take a call on whether he wanted to divulge it or not. She had thrown the ball in his court.

Now she was thrilled. Every nerve of her being was on red alert! Her heart thudded loudly against her chest even as she said, as calmly as she could, “O.K. Send him in.”

She rose from her chair as he entered, wishing him “Good morning Giridharji” and bade him to be seated. The peon served them tea as usual and went away.

As they quietly sipped the delicious cardamom tea, Manini sensed some tension in the air. Giridharji didn’t seem to be too comfortable. His hands had a tremor as he took the mug to his mouth and his eyes were downcast. It was as if he was avoiding eye contact with her.

Just then her personal mobile rang.

My Life, My Way! - An Excerpt

E-book

Excerpt from 'My Life, My Way!' - a thriller, penned by Mrs. Priya Ramesh Swaminathan.

Tarun was soon questioning Shridhar Vyas at his home.

“Sir, a strand of your hair was found in Tina’s bathroom. Its DNA matches that of yours! What was it doing there?”

The suave Shridhar Vyas appeared flummoxed. But the shrewd person that he was, he kept his eyes from blinking and looked at Tarun squarely in the eye.

          “I beg your pardon!”

“You heard it right! Your hair was found at the scene of the crime. What were you doing there? When did you go there? Was Tina alive then? Was Colonel Manavendra there too? Do you know anything about Tina’s murder and the whereabouts of the Colonel?

“No. I don’t know anything about what you are asking. I didn’t go there ever!”

“The DNA evidence says so!” Tarun quietly pointed it out.

“Then prove it! Don’t waste my time.”

“You are under arrest Mr. Shridhar Vyas!” Tarun showed him his arrest warrant, with a flourish.

Shridhar Vyas mutely accompanied him to the police jeep, with two constables holding each arm of his. All that Shridhar could think then was that his fate was sealed.

At the lock-up, the inquisition began in right earnest. Tarun was all business!

“So now you will speak Mr. Vyas, right?”

Her eyes filled up with warm tears, as if on cue. She glanced downwards to rub the tears out from the corners of her eyes, inwardly wondering whether her tears would do the trick! Melt the stone!

Sharmaji was solemnly contemplating how he could leave that place as quickly as possible. Tears always made him uncomfortable. Weak. These ladies and their crocodile tears! He grimaced inwardly. He looked at her bent head, her neat chignon, slender nape of her neck, fine pearls encircling it, smooth skin…. Oh no!

He looked away exasperatedly. He had just had the irresistible urge to touch her shoulder, draw her into his warm embrace and comfort her.

Reining in his impulses, he jumped up and started walking without a backward glance. Years of rigorous self-discipline had not gone waste! He felt elated.

My best teachers - A heartfelt tribute on Teacher's Day - Part 3

Mr. Arun Joglekar, the teacher (guruji) who taught me Hindustani Classical singing at the Bharat Gayan Samaj, was a meticulous instructor and an exacting task-master. He was partially blind and used to commute all alone, from a distance of about 10 kms. to the music centre for imparting lessons in singing, sitartabla, etc. I was struck by his independent nature and the ability to take life's bitter lessons with a dose of humour.

He would make me sing the notes again and again, till my vocal chords protested. Once I was out of breath and paused for a breather. He asked me why I had stopped practising, and I said that I had run out of breath. I replied in colloquial Marathi, "Hawa geli" (The air has gone). He thought that the Harmonium which I played while singing along to its accompaniment, had not been played properly and hence the air had gone out of that wind instrument. I said, "Fufusatli hawa geli" (The air has gone out of my lungs!) He burst out laughing and said that I had a whacky sense of humor, whereas I had been too tired to crack a joke!

He knew how to put his over-smart students in place by being curt with them. His tone would convey the message as sharply as an arrow hitting the bull's eye!

When I told him that I was just interested in singing and not in giving the tedious exams on the subject, he was over-joyed and said simply, "Good, now I can concentrate on just that aspect."

He would ask me to write the notations across two pages of the fullscape book, peering closely at what I was doing, and promptly note the errors, with his limited vision. He would scold me if I sang wrongly and even explained the difference between Hindustani and Carnatic types of singing, remarking that the Carnatic vocalists were perfect in taal i.e. rhythm.

Over two and a half years, he taught me around 8 ragas. We developed genuine fondness for each other and his five-year old daughter would address me as Maushi (mother's sister, in Marathi) I also met his beautiful wife and we all would often chat like good friends. Thus the lines between our relationship had blurred from that of a guru-shishya (teacher-disciple) one to that of close friends with genuine respect and affection for each other.

Last but certainly not the least, is my favorite teacher - Life! It has taught me certain lessons that have been an eye-opener, reprimanded me for mistakes, applauded me on my good decisions and always been around; chiding, approving, coaxing, praising and egging me on towards my goals. It is what makes me a vibrant, cheerful and optimistic individual with a never-say-die attitude.

Dear Life, the experience that you have given me will always enhance my personality. Thank you for always encouraging me to see the brighter side of any issue and making me what I am! We will always be together - Till death does us apart!

Ashta Vinayak Yatra - A Pilgrimage Beyond Compare!

ashtavinayak

                                             A PILGRIMAGE BEYOND COMPARE!

Ashta Vinayak Glory
Our Ashta Vinayak pilgrimage was a 2-day, one night journey. Braving the wintry chill, we set off at 7 a.m. by bus. The first stop was at Morgaon, for darshan of the Lord Mayureshwar, as Lord Ganpati is known here. The idol has the Naga Raja’s hood on its head. It is believed that Lord Brahma had constructed this temple. Legend says that Lord Ganesh, as Mayureshwar (Moresh) or the peacock-rider, vanquished the asura Sindhu, after entreaties by all the Gods. The temple’s Mughal architecture is distinct. A Nandi sitting in front of the temple’s entrance is unique, as this is found only in front of Lord Shiva’s temples.
We had a plate of hot vegetable pohe and tea for breakfast and then set off for Siddhivinayak darshan at Siddhatek, near Daund. God Vishnu supposedly vanquished the asuras Madhu and Kaitabh after propitiating Ganesha here. This Ganapati has his trunk pointing towards the right, hence is known as Siddhivinayak. Devotees can complete the 5 kms. Pradakshina, only by circumambulating the hill.

When we had earlier visited this temple, we had crossed the swollen Bhima river in a row-boat. But now a bridge over the river has made it possible for the bus to directly reach near the temple and cut down the journey time.

Our co-passengers broke juicy, sour tamarinds from the trees and distributed them. After a delicious buffet lunch at a restaurant there, we proceeded further to Theur.
The Chintamani Ganapati of Theur is believed to relieve all the devotees from their worries. The wooden temple has a small stone fountain inside it. A huge paved courtyard, an enormous bell and a Shiva temple, are the other attractions here. It is believed that the Lord retrieved the precious Chintamani jewel from Guna, for Sage Kapila, here. In return, the Sage garlanded him with the jewel and named him as Chintamani Vinayak.

The last Ganapati darshan for that day was of the huge Ranjangaon Ganapati known as Maha Ganapati. This Ganapati had aided Lord Shiva in fighting the demon Tripurasura. This idol is believed to have 10 hands and 20 trunks. The sun’s rays fall directly on the idol, at a particular time of the day.
The awesome entrance arch of Ranjangaon Temple

Security being strict, none of the pilgrims was allowed to carry anything inside the temple. Hence we visited the temple by turns.

Then we went to Lenyadri, watching the movie “Oh My God” enroute; again had a sumptuous buffet dinner and spent the night at the Lenyadri Ganapati Devasthan Trust’s lodgings. The room was very neat, with clean bed-sheets, pillows and blankets. The attached toilet - cum- bathroom was also spic and span.

Next morning at 5.30 a.m., we had tea and started climbing the steep 283 steps to  Lenyadri, the 3rd century, Buddhist-cave shrine of Girijatmaja Ganapati. The idol is carved on the stone wall of the cave and faces eastward, with its trunk turned to the left, with Lord Shiva and Hanuman on either side. Legend has it that Goddess Parvati created her son Ganapati by bringing a mud idol to life there. Lord Ganapati had supposedly spent his childhood days there.

The steep climb to the cave-shrine at Lenyadri
We saw the glorious sunrise with a panoramic view of the surroundings from the temple’s precincts. We participated in the 7 a.m. aarti, clicked photos of the 6 stone pillars, with carvings of cows, elephants, etc. and started descending.

A huge horde of monkeys was making its presence felt there. One huge monkey leapt at me and vigorously tugged my carry-bag, denting it. As my husband shooed it off, it retreated reluctantly. A baby monkey clambered on to a man’s back and sat cutely on his head. That man didn’t seem to mind it! We warily descended the hill.
We had a breakfast of piping hot upma and tea at the same restaurant where we had had dinner, shopped for collectibles and resumed our pilgrimage to Ozhar.

The Vighnaharta/Vigneshwara Ganapati of Ozhar relieves one of all the obstacles in one’s life. Lord Ganesha killed a demon named Vighnasur, hence the name. The idol has gems for its eyes, on its forehead and on its navel. Brass statues of His divine consorts Riddhi and Siddhi flank the idol. The temple, with its gold dome, twin deepastambhs (stone pillars for holding oil lamps) and two life-sized, stone-carved, dwarapalas (guards); is awesome.

Behind the temple, was a huge lake. It appeared misty and tranquil. As there wasn’t any time for boating, we started for Mahad.

Mahad, is very far, about 200 kms. from Ozhar. It was a 4- hour journey to this place in Raigad district. En route, we saw fresh sugarcane crop being harvested and ferried for crushing by trucks, tractors and bullock-carts. The cleaner of our bus adeptly pulled some sugar-cane from the passing vehicles and gave them to some passengers (who had strong teeth!).

The magnificent entrance to Ozar temple
We passed by horticulture farms. The farmers were busy in their fields as we feasted our eyes on the lush greenery all around. Nature was kind to this part of the state, it seemed, as abundant water was visible in the water-bodies there.

The serene lake behind Ozar temple

The elongated idol of Varada Vinayak at Mahad is benign and this is the only Ganapati in this yatra that can be touched by the pilgrims. We can personally offer garlands and flowers here. This idol is swayambhu and had emerged from a pond behind the temple.

Then it was time for the last of the Ashta Vinayaks, the Ballaleshwar temple at Pali. This is the only Ashta Vinayak Ganapati named after an ardent devotee of the Lord. The idol in this temple is attired in traditional clothes, as he appeared to Ballal, in the form of a Brahmin. The prasad offered here is besan laddu, instead of the customary modak. The Dhundivinayak Ganapati must be visited before the Ballaleshwar Ganapati, as per tradition.

A refreshing glass of kokam sarbat was served to us instead of tea. Then we returned to Pune at 7.30 p.m.

We had already vowed to return for the pilgrimage at the earliest; as the pilgrimage had satiated our souls.

Suddenly a thump landed on his back. It was Shivani. “Hey, why are you quiet, man? Say something. Isn’t it beautiful here?” Himesh looked around at the gulmohar trees slowly wobbling by, in full bloom and felt the cool breeze ruffling his hair. Shivani also looked very pretty in a cream tank top paired with black jeans. Her thick, shoulder-length hair blew around her face, making her look innocent and charming. Her lips had a hint of pale pink lip balm. Her eyes flashed brightly, further accentuated by an eye-liner. She had definitely dressed up to impress him!

“Yes, very pretty,” he drawled meaningfully. She blushed delightedly. “Me or the scenery?” she asked coquettishly. “Both” he said, with a slight grin. Shivani fawned at him obviously. Probably she was making some headway with him!

Then just to tease her, he remarked “But Mira is beautiful, you know what I mean!” She gave him a vicious look. “No need to rub it in,” she said peevishly. As tears stung her eyes, she impulsively grabbed the whip and reins of the horse from Sajjan after roughly pushing him aside. He was stunned. So much strength in a chit of a girl!
