An Excerpt from 'The Enigma'

“Let me see.  I’ll reschedule my appointments in the office; cancel the current ones and join you say, by late afternoon.  That’s the soonest I can make,” he said ruefully, his voice full of concern.

“Oh, that will be perfectly fine.  I’ll be waiting for you.  Let’s have dinner together.  Candle-light if you please.  And before you jump to any conclusions, let me warn you that the electricity supply is very erratic around here.  Half the while, I’m living in the dark.  I guess I’m used to it now.  You’ll have to, too!” she joked.

That frivolous remark set off his fertile imagination till he started drooling.  Maybe tonight he would win her over!

Respectful Salute to The Father of Our Nation - Mahatma Gandhiji on Martyrs' Day/Shaheed Diwas

Mahatma Gandhiji - The Father of Our Nation

Sabarmati Ashram

My answer to a question asked on Quora:

Does "what one does" determine "what "one's style" is labeled", which, if the answer is yes, means "one's style" is as ever-changing as "one's doings"? Or does "one's style" determine "what kind of "doings that one will be doing""?

My wife Priya, an award-winning author says, “If the second option is true, we could consider the example of Mahatma Gandhi, our beloved and world-renowned leader. He had given up wearing western attire and adopted our ‘desi’ that is, local attire (a khadi dhoti or loin cloth) with aplomb, wearing it everywhere without any fuss. That became his trademark style, along with his watch which hung from a chain around his waist; and his extra-long walking stick. His keen and observant eyes always watched from behind round-rimmed spectacles. A concession would be a piece of cloth around his shoulders. His attire screamed local without being vocal!

He wore the same outfit when he met kings and peasants alike. His simplicity exuded from his attire just as his confident and quick gait meant business! Having a watch meant that he valued time and was particular about it. His no-nonsense attire also spelt his no-nonsense approach towards life.

Probably, his way of minimalism gave him more time to concentrate on other important things, not the least being achieving freedom for India. So total focus, punctuality, speed, shunning of materialistic trappings, wearing handspun (His own craftsmanship) khadi signaled his need to stick to his roots and be one among his countrymen. He always said that India is predominantly one that is 80% agrarian. So what better way to project one’s identity than to wear locally produced attire, spectacles, sandals, et al? Thus he was the earliest example of the currently touted “Vocal for local” tagline.

He was fastidious about cleanliness and even took his wife, the venerable Kasturbaji to task for not cleaning the toilet!

Even his diet included local produce and was spartan, just like his abode. We had the opportunity to visit Sabarmati Ashram and were awe-struck by its simplicity.

Thus the Mahatma is a shining example of how true leaders aid people’s perceptions about them and stick to their goals and ideals, come what may! Similarly, speaking your mind and calling a spade, a spade, as he always did, with firmness and compassion, courage and conviction; rallying everyone around him to follow his principles of Satyagraha (urge for truth), Uposhan (fasting) and non-violence; made him a role model for many.

His oratory was unparalleled as was his commitment to his cause.

His is an example of 360 degree communication! Everything he said, did, wrote and wore sent great and unforgettable messages to humanity. ‘No preaching, just doing’ seemed to be his motto. He lived his life and owned it too! No wonder, he was a fashion icon in his own right!”

(Contd.) An Unforgettable Pilgrimage - Sri Ram Janmabhoomi at Ayodhya

Our rickshaw driver didn’t know the Dharamshala and some persons gave wrong directions.  We had to turn back and reach the Dharamshala; not before thinking whether we would ever reach our destination!

I was secretly relieved to reach the Dharamshala, because on the way I kept thinking that we would be attacked by bandits (gory scenes from the movies leapt before me, in my mind’s eye); or that we would be banged from either the front or the back, by other vehicles; as the cycle-rickshaw didn’t have head or tail lights and we both wore a black sweater/jacket respectively and it was pitch-dark!

I had even deliberately kept quiet because I was scared that a lady’s voice on a deserted street at that late hour would attract unwanted elements!

Though we got an inexpensive room in the Dharamshala, we were informed that we would have to go out and eat our dinner in a dhaba in front of the Dharamshala.  We went there and to our pleasant surprise, we could get hot and fresh meals even at 11 p.m. in the night.  We ate in the dark, joking about the candle-light dinner and teasing each other about our nerve-wracking experience.

We went back to the Dharamshala and immediately went off to sleep, after thanking Lord Ram for bringing us safely to our destination and providing us shelter and food even late in the night.

We got up at 4 a.m. in the morning, bathed and set off for Ram Janmabhoomi.  We hired a cycle-rickshaw.  As we reached the temple site, we saw a large posse of policemen on duty there.  The ‘temple’ had not yet opened for the day.  So the rickshaw driver offered to show other interesting places in Ayodhya and then return to the temple.  We readily agreed.

We saw Hanuman Garhi which has a Lord Hanuman temple, the Sarayu river, the site where building blocks of red sand-stone were being carved, ostensibly for the construction of the new Ram Temple there; the Sant Tulsidas Bagh and other temples.

Though it was biting cold, we enjoyed the early morning conducted tour (by the driver) through narrow cobbled streets on the wobbly cycle-rickshaw.

Then we went back to Sri Ram Janmabhoomi.  The rickshaw driver told us that he would meet us on the other side of the temple as we would not be exiting from the entrance.

We bought prasad and sacred threads to offer in the ‘temple’.

The policemen asked us to hand over our camera as photography is not allowed there.  I was checked by lady police and told to keep my hand-bag there itself in their custody and take only my money along with me.  My husband was checked by male policemen.

Just as we were about to enter the barricaded entrance, protectively covered on all sides by grills to keep the numerous monkeys at bay, a monkey lunged at me and made off with my prasad.  I was taken aback and dropped my specs’ case which contained Rs.1000/-.  The monkey pulled it into the bushes.

I was nearly in tears; when the policemen who’d seen everything came to our rescue.  They brought back my case after a short hunt and advised us to keep the remaining prasad packet and other belongings in our pockets and keep our hands free.  I stuffed everything into my husband’s jacket-pocket.

Two other men who had come from behind joked that though the barricades were not bullet-proof, they were definitely ‘monkey-proof’.

We were frisked at 3-4 places in the long route to the ‘temple’.  Just as we were wondering whether we were in a war-zone or a temple, we came upon a shrine set on top of a huge mound of flattened earth.  There was mud and rubble all around.  Two priests sat in front of the shrine and two policemen sat on guard, with rifles just in front of them.  There were 2 boxes, one for offerings, and the other for cash-donations.  We asked them where the temple was, and were shocked and surprised to hear that that shrine was ‘the’ Sri Ram Janmabhoomi!  The silver-foil idol was not clearly visible from where we stood.  It was about 15 feet away.  It just shone and showered blessings on us.  After all the trouble we had taken to visit the temple, this surely was an anti-climax for us! The make-shift shrine had caught us totally unawares.

We made our offerings at the shrine, bowed our heads and felt the ground of Sri Ram Janmabhoomi; constantly feeling the intense scrutiny of policemen and made our way out.

We had to again go to the entrance from the outer side of the ‘site’ to retrieve our camera and purse from the police.

Later we noticed that Ayodhya was full of policemen on duty.  Though seemingly peaceful, tension hovered in the atmosphere there.

Strangely I felt very happy and peaceful in Ayodhya.  We called up our relatives and told them that we were calling from Ayodhya - the land of the historic Sri Ram Janmabhoomi and had visited the make-shift ‘temple’.

I left Ayodhya, saddened by the thought that we didn’t have more time to spare and explore this enchanting place; but also happy that my wish to see Sri Ram Janmabhoomi was at last fulfilled.  It was truly an unforgettable pilgrimage against all odds; conquered by will-power and faith!

An Unforgettable Pilgrimage! - Sri Ram Janmabhoomi at Ayodhya

It is pitch-dark and cold.  A lone cycle-rickshaw is slowly making its way on a deserted road, lit only by the moon-light which finds its way through the branches of huge trees on both sides of the road.  The only other lights are the small lamps in jhuggis which line both sides of the bumpy road.

There is a couple in the cycle-rickshaw praying fervently to the Almighty, to take them safely to their destination.

The eerie silence magnifies the smallest of sounds hence even the rustle of bushes ruffles the couple who nervously look around, thinking that something or someone is suddenly going to pounce on them.  The gnarled branches of the trees seem to menacingly confront them – a scene straight from the English movie ‘Evil Dead’.

As the husband angrily rebukes the wife for having embarked on this ‘dangerous’ journey, the wife retorts ‘’Keep your cool.  Don’t show that you are nervous or scared.  Be brave, God is with us.  Don’t worry we’ll reach safely.”

Both fall silent, each in his/her own world of fear and prayer.

Well, in case, you are wondering whether this is a scene straight from a movie or a crime thriller, you are wrong!

The couple in the cycle-rickshaw was my husband and I, bravely risking going to Sri Ram Janmabhoomi in Ayodhya at ten in the night on the 26th of February, 2005.

But let me start from the beginning.  That February, both of us that is, my husband and I visited Varanasi, Allahabad, Agra, Fatehpur Sikri, Mathura and Vrindavan.

Initially, we had planned to go to Ayodhya from Varanasi, as we thought is was nearer from Varanasi, but enquiries at Varanasi revealed that it was very far and that we would have to stay overnight in Allahabad and then go to Ayodhya.

Since the next stop in our tour itinerary was Allahabad anyway, we decided to go to Ayodhya after reaching Allahabad.

We reach Allahabad from Varanasi at 12.00 p.m., checked into our guest house, had our lunch and set off for the bus-stand at 4 p.m.  We thought we would reach Faizabad (from where we were to go to Ayodhya) at about 7.30 p.m.  But when we boarded a bus for Faizabad at 5 p.m. and enquired with the conductor, he told us that we would reach Faizabad only at 9.30 p.m.

At this, my husband asked me whether I still wanted to go, because we would be entirely new to that place and didn’t have any hotel reservations.  Similarly, we were entirely clueless about how we would be going to Ayodhya which is about 8-10 kms from Faizabad.

I reasoned with him that we had only 2 days in Allahabad according to our itinerary and that I desperately wanted to visit Ayodhya because of its religious and historic significance.  It would be the chance of our life-time; and I didn’t want to miss that opportunity.

Reluctantly my husband agreed to proceed.  We had an uneventful journey, but due to some delay at the scheduled stops en route, our bus reached Faizabad only at 10.00 p.m.

Enquiries at the stand made us uneasy, because everyone we asked for directions, gave us conflicting ones.  There was no bus going directly to Ayodhya.  The only means of transport were the six-seaters.

As it was quite late in the night, we would probably have had to wait for long, before we could get any six-seater!

As we were standing there, debating on our next course of action; tired, cold and hungry, I spotted a hotel next to the stand.  We immediately went and made enquiries with the receptionist there.  I asked him whether we could rent a room and stay there overnight.  I also told him the purpose of our trip.  He looked kind and helpful.  He advised me that that hotel was not suitable for us.  Of course we secretly wondered what he actual meant!

Then I enquired about lodging facilities at Ayodhya.  He told me to go to Birla Dharamshala and stay there overnight, as it was popular with the pilgrims there.  He told us that it was on the main road itself.

We again came near the main road and started watching out for a six-seater.  A jeep stood nearby.  The driver asked us where we were headed for at that late hour.  On hearing our destination, he offered to take us there for Rs.400/-.

We knew that the distance was only 10 kms and that he was trying to take advantage of our plight.  We refused his offer and then fortunately a six-seater came along.  We boarded it, but our joy was short-lived, when we came to know that it would not ferry us up to Ayodhya, but somewhere mid-way, as the driver was on his way home.

Left with no other alternative, still bickering about whether we should’ve stayed back in Allahabad after all; or even Faizabad, overnight; we were back on the road, somewhere mid-way between Faizabad and Ayodhya.  We didn’t even know how far we were from Ayodhya!

I decided that we should wait for another six-seater and go to Ayodhya, but my husband’s impatience and hunger got the better of him and he declared that we would complete the remaining journey in a cycle-rickshaw.

Thus we boarded a cycle-rickshaw, promising the driver Rs.50/- and set off on this adventurous journey; as described in the first few paragraphs of this article.

As the lights had gone off in Ayodhya, our journey was frightening, though secretly I was also thrilled that finally I was truly going to Sri Ram Janmabhoomi!

To be continued....

Excerpt
The shrill ringing of his phone jolted him from his reverie.  Cheerfully, he said “Hello!”  His wife Meena’s voice flowed down through the line, loud and clear.  “Please send the driver here, along with the car.  We’ve been waiting since an hour for him!”

He was surprised.   Why hadn’t Hariprasad gone to pick his family?  He had told Dwarka Charan that he had an urgent errand to do, what was it…..?  Yes, pick up his daughter from her nursery school, return back to the complex, take the vehicle and ferry his family to the office for the function.

Dwarka was also concerned, as the priest, being a busy man; was a stickler to punctuality and hated things disturbing his busy schedule.  He’d be hopping mad.  He was supposed to come along with the family too.  Hariprasad was going to bring all of them in 2 rounds.  And here, he hadn’t even started as yet!

Over the intercom, he contacted the receptionist.  “Kindly ask the security whether they’ve seen my driver.  If you spot him, kindly ask him to contact me immediately.”

The receptionist wondered why he couldn’t call his driver on his mobile immediately.  Then she got the answer.  “You see, I’ve forgotten my mobile at home.  My wife will definitely bring it,” he fibbed.  He was saving on his out-going calls.  He didn’t know how to send an SMS and was too embarrassed to ask anyone for the ‘know-how’!

After 5 minutes, the receptionist promptly reported to him that no one, including herself had seen him.

“Please ask the security guards to go and check in the basement!” he requested.

        “Very well, Sir.”

Accordingly both the security guards went to the basement to check it out.  They didn’t return, even after 15 minutes. Then the receptionist Sunita went to see what the matter was.  She was scared when she saw the rows of neatly parked four-wheelers and 2- wheelers in the deserted, huge and eerie basement.  She didn’t venture far.  She just glanced right and left from the bottom of the stairs leading to the basement and immediately turned back and fled.  There was no one there.  Not a soul!

Well-written novel. Maintained the suspense till the end. Municipal Corporation should think twice before asking employees to clean gutters without proper protection. Same also - housing societies.
Congrats. Keep up the good work. (Sic)
