                                                              EXCERPT

           Unbidden, a figure materialised before my mind’s eye. An evil man with a pronounced hunch. Beady black eyes that could pin you to the floor or to the ceiling. Pock-marked, ruddy face that had evidently weathered many a storm. Misshapen nose that looked like it had been at the receiving end of a vicious blow. Well-aimed and well-timed, probably… Thin and mean black lips that pursed into a straight line, almost disappearing into the fleshy upper lip. Jutting, bulbous, pitted chin - a walnut!

          Though of above-average height, the hunch made him appear squat. Or probably, it was the rolls of flesh that stuck to every pore of his being! Ever so often, he would straighten up in a bid to draw himself to his full height, but would instantly shrink back; the hunch overpowering him, subduing him. When it did that, he and I could look each other in the eye. As equals of 5 feet and three inches height!

          Then I could finish my appraisal of his form. Misshapen, faded blue trousers that barely reached his ankles would cling to his protruding belly, thanks to black, fraying suspenders. If the suspenders ever gave way, the trousers would surely land in a heap around his ankles! That moment was probably just around the corner.

          A dirty old vest that looked as if it had braved centuries of onslaughts of dirt, grime and gore gave shape to his torso, generously and unapologetically spilling out of the suspenders. Feet encased in worn-out sneakers that had probably been with him for a century, or for as long as the vest! A fine pair! Trust-worthy. Loyal. Faded and jaded, but not out. So just how old could he be?

          My gaze would zero in on his pate of thinning red hair. Henna-dyed? An even sprinkling of thin red hair covered his head, showing a shiny scalp. As if his pate could give me an answer about his age…. But these days, every male was balding early and blaming it on the pollution or genes! 

          Back to his face. Rounded, high forehead, lined heavily by three deep grooves. Broken, bushy, greying eyebrows. There, I got my answer! Probably fifties. The cheeks hung like bags of groceries, competing with the flesh on the upper lip, to touch his chin.

          I can almost hear your unspoken question. Why did I call him an evil man?

          I stared back, unabashed. He was looking drop-dead gorgeous. His thick hair was being ruffled by the strong wind. Though rivulets of perspiration ran down his temples and neck, he appeared fresh and alert. Only the clenching and unclenching of his square jaws gave away his tension. He was evidently waiting for me to speak first. Ladies first!

          Looking intently into his dark eyes, I was trying to fathom his intentions. Discussion indeed! About what?.........

          Feeling slightly uncomfortable, he turned his attention towards the copper bottle that he had in his right hand. “Water?” he inquired.

          “Thanks” I said and took it from his hand. As my hand slightly touched his, a frisson went up my spine. I looked downwards and then raised my head and had a long swig from the bottle, taking care to not touch the bottle’s rim. He was keenly watching my tanned throat as the water went down my gullet and I gulped. Then his gaze fell on my heaving chest.

           His left hand twitched as it gripped the lower part of the bench. Was he nervous?
