An excerpt from the story - Only Hard Work Pays

“We want you to do well in life. But we also want you to be with us,” said his father, who already looked weary and anguished at the thought of having their moral support taken away from them.

“Aai, Baba, I’ll come back soon, rich and prosperous. I’ll buy back all our rightful land from the Patil and give my siblings a better life. I promise that I’ll never forget you. How can I do that, after everything that I’ve seen you undergoing, just for the five of us?” He lovingly embraced and caressed each of his siblings, touched his parents’ feet, took their blessings, and set off for his new and exciting sojourn.
All along the way, in the ST bus, his parents’ words played on in his mind and the sad and wistful faces of his family members skipped across his mind’s eyes. He silently vowed that he would fulfill all their desires and only then return. It was going to be “Do or Die,” henceforth for him!
When he reached Mumbai, he immediately felt home-sick and yearned for the green, open fields of sugarcane swaying in the breeze, the fresh unpolluted air, his parents and siblings; and his innocent students. When would they next meet him? he often wondered uneasily. He also realized that life would not be a bed of roses in Mumbai.

An excerpt from the story - Against All Odds

As soon as she went in, her Boss summoned Vitthal and asked him to purchase some snacks and soft drinks for all of them as they were working after office-hours. Sujata looked at Vitthal with a sinking heart. She knew that he would have to obey their Boss’s command, as he had a huge family of seven members to look after, and needed his job; and hence he could not afford to risk his displeasure.

“Please pour a glass of water for me,” her Boss said brusquely, as he had guessed that Sujata had asked Vitthal to wait for her outside and thwart his plans. As she turned to reach out for the glass pitcher of water, he closed the door and locked it.

She turned swiftly and angrily asked, “What does this mean Sir? Please open the door and let me go or I’ll scream and call for help.”

Unconditional Love in Exchange

Foreword

The importance of hard-work can’t be over-emphasized. It’s imperative to diligently struggle to make our living. Along the way, we could face countless obstacles, some daunting, some trivial! What matters the most, is our courage in surmounting them and not giving up our cherished desire of a comfortable and meaningful existence.

Sometimes we get more than what we bargained for; due to sheer luck or the blessing of destiny; at other times, we may even risk losing all that we have!

           Honesty and virtue ably support those who strive for success. In the end, we could do well to remember what the sacred Bhagavad Gita propagates;

“Keep doing your duty, without expecting any rewards!”

When we do accomplish our goals, we must be grateful towards those who wittingly or unwittingly helped us in reaching that zenith of success. This acknowledgement of gratitude will always hold us in good stead as it will prove that we have our soul in the right place!

When we share our compassion and love with others in need; with a clear conscience and without any expectations, our Creator will lead us forth to our desired destiny.

MOTIVATION, MY STORY

Priya: The transformation of an avid reader into a renowned author

How Priya Swaminathan's eighth standard English teacher motivated her to start reading

Books have been my companions since childhood. My parents and teachers encouraged me to read as much as I could. Amar Chitra Katha comicsChandamama and Champak; soon gave way to Readers’ Digestmystery novels by Enid BlytonHardy Boys and Nancy Drew mystery novels; followed closely by the mushy and romantic, Mills & Boon novels. Later, classics by great littérateurs like Gurudev Rabindranath TagoreMunshi Premchand; the great Bard of AvonWilliam Shakespeare, and the philosophical novelist, Paulo Coelho; were devoured by me. Thrillers by Sidney SheldonAgatha ChristieDan BrownJohn GrishamRobin CookRoald Dahl; and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle‘s Sherlock Holmes series are my all-time favorites. Jeffrey Archer and his works have also played a key role in helping me develop a penchant for reading.  I am a proud bookworm!

What sparked off my passion for reading was, undoubtedly, a chance criticism by my eighth standard English teacher at school! She challenged me to write the answers in my own words, instead of relying on the usual rote learning method that was (and still is) so commonplace in the great Indian education system. Stung to the core, I started brushing up on my vocabulary and language skills by reading everything that I could lay my hands on! I filled up notebooks with as many words as I could. The dictionary became my constant companion. Thanks to my continuous learning, I gained confidence in writing essays, articles, poems and stories.

Priya Swaminathan, Author of 'The Mysterious Basement of Summer City'

After my BS, I obtained a Degree in Communication and Journalism from the Pune University. It was the best decision of my life. I have been freelancing from then till date. I have several published writings to my credit in reputed publications like Woman’s EraAlive, Sakaal Times, and many more. I contribute to prestigious travel-websites like Holidayiq.com and TripAdvisor.in. I maintain four blogs and have published nine ebooks and paperback novels on Amazon. I have won several writing competitions, including a novel-writing contest, organized by Vishwakarma Publications, Pune. I won the second prize for my debut novel titled The Mysterious Basement of Summer CityMy reading habit had spurred me to become an author!

I love reading books for information, inspiration, insight, motivation and entertainment. Conversing about bestsellers is a great ice-breaker at social events. Bonding over books, with friends and family, at leisure, is a pleasurable experience. To encourage budding talent, I conduct creative-writing classes too.

To sum up, I can’t imagine a life without books. My tryst with reading and writing is sure to be a life-long affair!

It was quite an inspirational story, Priya.

All my writings including books always carry my copyright claim, yet the makers of a recently released, popular film plagiarized substantial portions of one of my Sci-fi novels.

The plagiarists and the production house will soon be getting a legal notice for copyright infringement.

So copycats, please BEWARE!

I have published 28 books till date and hope to have a library of my own books, one day in future.

Many aspiring writers have been trained by me through Priya's Vision Academy's highly successful Creative/Content Writing Course-cum-workshop conducted by me.

Do read the glowing tributes paid by my students to this course, in earlier blog-posts here.

If you so desire, you too may enroll for this course and give wings to your career as a professional writer.
