                                   Excerpt from the short story - Black-out

          “Have I come to the wrong house? I am sorry,” he teased and half-turned to go. She pulled him inside, shut the door and soundly kissed him on his lips. Since she’d taken up writing, she had ignored her appearance and was often dowdily dressed only in loose cotton night-gowns, with her hair messily knotted at her nape and held back with sundry pins. She claimed that she felt comfortable while writing and anyway she was all alone at home!

          Hence Sudhanshu had always been welcomed home by a harried author, who would take her time in opening the door and immediately rush back to her precious writing.

          She ignored her appearance as well as him. Fortunately, she still maintained her house, but he wondered how long it would be, before that too became a casualty to her literary pursuits. Hence he was pleasantly surprised by her immaculate and feminine appearance that evening. He felt buoyed by the fact that ‘junior’ too was not around. It had been months since….

An Excerpt from the Short Story - A New Battle

         When Ananya resumed her place on the bed, propped up comfortably against the soft cushions, with her laptop on her lap, he glanced at her with a ‘daggers-drawn’ look, as she chatted online, with a soft smile lighting up her face.  Gautam took the luxury of slowly appraising her.  It had been ages since he had seen her properly.  She was more of a ‘voice’ to him, a sweet voice which had been relegated to the background like a melodious strain playing on the music system of his life.  Yes, his life had been like a harmonious symphony, with no jarring notes interrupting the smooth rhythm of his existence. 

          Now he suddenly realized, uncomfortably, that this sweet voice had a face too!  The same face that had bewitched him 14 years ago now swam into his line of vision with reinforced clarity.  He had forgotten how beautiful she looked.  Now, even in her bed-clothes, with freshly brushed hair, softly framing her oblong face and cascading all around her, her slightly lined and pock-marked face, scrubbed clean and sparkling with good health and radiant smile which showed off her high cheekbones; she looked happy and relaxed.

             “Today, Sneha will dance with me,” said Gaurav cheekily, already taking her hand and readying for the dance. Helplessly, she darted an anxious glance towards Abhijeet. But being in a very good mood, he waved his hand good-naturedly and urged her to go along with Gaurav and enjoy herself. 

             As Gaurav talked with her knowledgeably about varied topics, Sneha found herself relaxing in his company. So he was not that introvert, after all, she thought. But after a while, her eyes sought Abhijeet. If only Gaurav would allow her to dance with Abhijeet now! He had been monopolising her, the entire evening. She hadn’t even congratulated Abhijeet properly.

A Unique Sun Temple in Modhera, Gujarat!

Modhera’s Sun Temple – Brilliant Architecture!

Feb 2020

 

We hired an auto to travel 105 kms. from Ahmedabad to Mehsana (Modhera). This superb Sun Temple was built in the 11th century A.D. by the Solanki King Bhimdev I. It has a rectangular step-well/tank in the front, known as Rama Kund, which has impeccable geometric design. A wooden railing has been erected around the step-well to protect people from unwittingly falling into the tank.There is a Sabha Mandap, a connecting passage known as Antaraal and the Garbhagruha or the sanctum sanctorum. The walls, pillars, columns and exteriors of the Sabha Mandap and the Garbhagruha are heavily carved with intricate life forms of deities, celestial beings and animals. Twin pillars, again meticulously carved, stand guard in front of the temple. The shikhara of the temple had been destroyed during a Mughal invasion. The Sun Temple, like the one at Konarak, doesn’t have any idol in its sanctum sanctorum which is closed. Legend has it that while returning from Sri Lanka, along with his wife Sita, Lord Rama performed a yagna at this site, to cleanse himself of his sin of killing a Brahmin – Ravana, a devout Shaivite. Since this ritual was performed by a Modh Brahmin, the site/village was named as Modhera. Lord Shiva’s temple stands beside the Sun Temple. Fresh flowers bedecked the Shivaling. A museum with unique specimens of carving, provides us an insight into our rich cultural/architectural heritage. A toilet block stands behind this museum.Tourist buses are needed to visit this unique spot.
