World Heritage Day - 18th April - Let's cherish and preserve our heritage

    Recently we visited the first city in India to get the tag of the UNESCO World Heritage City - Ahmedabad. After visiting its numerous heritage structures, we realized that it indeed was a treasure-trove of our rich cultural and architectural heritage. 

     In my blog dated 24th February, I have relived my experience at Ahmedabad. Do peruse it!

     As an avid traveler who has visited lots of Indian heritage sites and been awe-struck by their resilience and sheer magnificence, I have lots of photographs to share. Here are some heritage landmarks:

By the way, in my opinion, most of the cities in India would qualify for the UNESCO World Heritage City tag as architectural gems dot our country, making it vibrant and a tourist's delight!

Our ancient Indian civilization and its way of life has charmed visitors for centuries and will undoubtedly continue to do so in the ages to come. Long Live India!

I eagerly await the time when I will be able to visit all the heritage sites of the world. May it come soon...

                       An excerpt from the story 'Unfinished Business' from TCSOK

          Scary bhooton ki kahaniyan that had been narrated in painstaking detail, with the accompanying sounds and effects, by a master story-teller, his paternal aunt; in his childhood, had made him nervous and edgy whenever he was left all alone, or in the dark.

          He would just refuse to go into any room in his house, all alone. He always wanted someone to sleep beside him. The night lamp would always be on. When lights went off, he cracked up and curled into a shivering ball with his limbs tucked under him and neck curved impossibly downward, to hide his face from the invisible spirit that he was convinced; was out to finish him off!

         Thus it was a strange quirk of fate that had made him a watchman, a supposedly brave person who would fend off thieves and intruders. Whenever he had night duty, in his initial months on his job, he would tie a talisman around his neck to ward off the evil spirits. The panic attacks that he usually got in the dark and when left alone, slowly subsided with time. But the talisman remained.

                       An excerpt from the story 'My Big Boss Up There' from TCSOK

Manoj would remark, “It’s high time you stopped looking at your father’s photo! Now you should be looking at mine!”

He started keeping an unbearably repulsive, close-up shot of his, in an equally hideous and unimaginative frame, on our bedside table. I had politely declined to frame one of our ‘lovey-dovey’ shots from our honeymoon, as it was something that I didn’t want to be reminded of!

I just softly told him, “That’s personal Manoj. Let it remain only between the two of us. A private remembrance!” Inwardly, I snidely remarked, “A private joke!”

Surprisingly, Manoj hadn’t persisted. He had instead, plastered the walls and the cupboards’ doors with huge posters of .....

They were definitely a ‘better-watch’ than his plain Jane of a wife! Needless to say, there was no love lost between the two of us.
