Modhera’s Sun Temple – Brilliant Architecture!

We hired an auto to travel 105 kms. from Ahmedabad to Mehsana (Modhera). This superb Sun Temple was built in the 11th century A.D. by the Solanki King Bhimdev I. It has a rectangular step-well/tank in the front, known as Rama kund, which has impeccable geometric design. A wooden railing has been erected around the step-well to protect people from unwittingly falling into the tank.There is a Sabha Mandap, a connecting passage known as Antaraal and the Garbhagruha or the sanctum sanctorum. The walls, pillars, columns and exteriors of the Sabha Mandap and the Garbhagruha are heavily carved with intricate life forms of deities, celestial beings and animals. Twin pillars, again meticulously carved, stand guard in front of the temple. The shikhara of the temple had been destroyed during a Mughal invasion. The Sun Temple, like the one at Konarak, doesn’t have any idol in its sanctum sanctorum which is closed. Legend has it that while returning from Sri Lanka, along with his wife Sita, Lord Rama performed a yagna at this site, to cleanse himself of his sin of killing a Brahmin – Ravana, a devout Shaivite. Since this ritual was performed by a Modh Brahmin, the site/village was named as Modhera.Lord Shiva’s temple stands beside the Sun Temple. Fresh flowers bedecked the Shivaling. A museum with unique specimens of carving, provides us an insight into our rich cultural/architectural heritage.A toilet block stands behind this museum.Tourist buses are needed to visit this unique spot.

                His father, Dr. Sujoy Mitra, a scientist had often satiated his never-ending queries on birth and death, various human races and their history.

                Books and films had whetted his appetite for knowledge about the origins of human beings, the Homo sapiens as they were described, in those Science journals; and he had delved deeper and deeper into the topic, until he had obtained a Doctorate in Anthropology. Alas, his father had not been around to share his glory, but he knew that he was the person responsible for his inquisitive nature and his Doctorate!

                His mother, Moilee, had given birth to him and left for her heavenly abode immediately. Hence all the recollections that he had of her were confined to the photographs of her, as a young girl and later, as a blushing bride! Often, he had wondered whether she had been reborn thence, and if so, when and where. He’d have loved to meet her! To acquaint her with his work and passion! He was sure that she’d have been immensely proud of him.

                 His gaze strayed automatically to an elderly woman named Kamala, who was toiling under the harsh sun. About 50, her lined face bore the marks of a relentless struggle for existence.

Dear mystery aficionados! You are in for a treat! Author Priya Ramesh Swaminathan has concocted a tale of an anthropologist researcher and his two dedicated assistants. The other characters in the plot add to the suspense and strange things happening at the site. The author has played with words and adds her inimitable style to the setting of the story.      “Abhijeet, your brother is getting on my nerves these days. He keeps hounding me and faking his affections for me. I am tolerating his behavior just because he is your brother. But it is high time you put him in his place. And drag him out of his dream world."

      

     “Sneha, I can understand your plight. My sympathy is with you. But look at the positive side of this situation. You have transformed Gaurav. He speaks politely and even checks his swear words before they escape from his mouth. He dresses up immaculately and has even mastered the art of making small talk. Thanks to you! It is rightly said that “Behind every successful man, there is a lady!” What my parents and I couldn’t achieve in 20 years, you’ve achieved just in 2 months. Bravo,” Abhijeet said with a laugh, as Sneha balled her fist and aimed a punch on his nose. He ducked just at the right moment and caught her tiny clenched fist. 

     “You are incorrigible!”

     

     “And you’re a sweetheart. Correction, My Sweetheart, besides, what’s the harm if you lead him on, if that makes him a better person?”

    

     “Abhijeet, how can you be so obtuse? If this state of affairs continues, I’m sure that it’ll cause heart-break, probably, for all of us. What if I succumb to his charms one day in the future?” she teased. 

     Suddenly Abhijeet became dead serious. “Promise me that you are only mine,” he sounded very anxious and earnest. For the first time, he appeared uncertain and confused. 

     “Of course, I am. But the ball is in your court now. If you don’t resolve this issue within a week, I’ll have to be frank and confront him with the truth. Things could take a nasty turn then. Don’t say then, that I didn’t warn you!” 

     She left Abhijeet in an uncharacteristically pensive mood that day.

As I am also very passionate about the English language and possess a flair for writing, I and Priya Madam complement each other immensely by adding our creative inputs together. It is this brainstorming that makes the classes all the more interesting and enjoyable and that definitely is the USP of these classes.

I get a hands-on experience while actually writing the assignments during the classes; simultaneously interacting with Madam through videoconferencing. I feel gratified to come across a teacher who is so friendly and approachable. She imparts excellent guidance, gives one-to-one attention and solves all my doubts and queries.

I am really looking forward to learning newer types of writing such as story-writing, poetry, autobiography, biography, debates, ads, website content writing etc. from her. 

Since I can learn from the comfort of my home, it is an added bonus!
